Designed around a courtyard, the house includes a hierarchy of zones with official residence in a private area at the front and rear. Bedroom and toilet are behind along the north south axis, while the picture, living and kitchen areas are grouped together at the front arranged along a linear east-west axis to form the spine of the house. Pages that form the center of the house faces south and ignored by the family area and bedroom on the ground and first floor. In addition to the page is steel staircase that connects the upper floor. On the ground and first floor, a room at the front and rear are linked by a “bridge-like ’space that goes round the yard. Also running parallel is the two-foot wall deep in places to act as a protective device for large windows or incorporate a built-in bench -wooden bench overlooking the open court. As land is increasingly scarce affordable cosmopolitan cities in India, development has spread into their outskirts. It’s moving toward the suburbs has led to extensive development, including extensive residential zone and commissioning of new private homes.
